There are a lot of books, articles, and blog posts out there about the weekday habits of successful people. Things like waking up early, eating a healthy breakfast, and unplugging at the end of the day tend to get included in these lists. But what happens between Friday night and Monday morning? Do successful people keep working hard, or do they completely unplug? I asked a couple of my super successful friends, Peter Gasca and Sylvester Chisom, what they do on the weekends to get ready for the week and they offered some great advice.
1. Keep a weekday routine
If you normally wake up at 5:30, go for a run, and eat breakfast Monday through Friday, then do the same thing on Saturday. Even if you take a day off from running, getting up at the same time every day ensures that your body is getting the rest it needs without sleeping too much (or too little) on the weekends.
2. Plan a schedule
Sure, weekends are a time to slow down a little, but planning what you want to accomplish each day will make every second of your weekend count. The worst way to spend a weekend is to waste it trying to figure out what you want to do. Spend some time earlier in the week or on Saturday morning deciding on one or two tasks that you want to accomplish on Saturday and again on Sunday. This makes sure you have some productivity on the weekend while still giving yourself plenty of freedom.
3. Catch up on important things
Contrary to popular belief, people who are successful in business don't spend all of their waking hours working. They take time on the weekends to get together with family and friends, to exercise, and yes, even to get some chores done around the house. Work is important, but so is your family, your home, and your health. Make these a priority on the weekends to balance out your work life and your home life.
4. Take a break
Meditate, go for a hike, wash the car, or take in the theater. Successful people know that their minds can't be working full-tilt 24/7, so they make time on the weekends to clear their thoughts to get ready for the week. Adding entertainment to the weekend is a great way to relax and take your mind off of work.
5. Prepare for Monday
Successful people know that they need to start Monday on a high note, so they take time on Sunday to plan ahead for the week. Set aside some time for yourself to check in on your schedule for the week ahead so that you know exactly what needs to be done first thing Monday morning. Make a list of events, meetings, or important things you need to do to keep momentum toward your goals. Another great idea is to make an "I did" list of things that you accomplished in the last week--this will keep you motivated and excited about pushing forward.
Taking these steps on the weekend is what allows successful people to have productive weeks. The weekend is coming up so you can start putting these ideas into practice to set yourself up for more successful work weeks.
