According to the National Day Calendar, June 2 is Leave Work Early Day. Laying aside the ridiculous nature of this "national day," I'm going to get behind it.
Everyone go home. As soon as you read this article, go home.
My work here is done.
Just kidding. I don't really care whether you go home early today or not, but leaving work early should be something that you do from time to time. Many employees (especially exempt employees) work a lot of hours, and they suffer from it. We all need a break from time to time. Here are 10 things you can do if you leave work early today--or any other day.
1. Go for a walk.
There's nothing better for clearing the head than a nice walk through nature. If the weather is nice where you are, today's the day to duck out early.
2. Get your hair cut.
Saturdays in the beauty salon are always chaotic (and I presume the same is true in the barber shop). Make your appointment and don't feel guilty about it.
3. Do something without the kids.
Hey, it's your leave work early day, not the daycare's. Yes, yes, perfect parents would never want to spend a moment apart from the children that they didn't have to. You're not a perfect parent--just a normal one. Go crazy and go grocery shopping. By yourself. Bliss.
4. Read a book.
Any book! Not just one that is designed to boost your career. (Although all reading is helpful to your brain.)
5. Eat a forbidden snack.
This one is especially good when combined with No. 1. Eat a great snack while walking.
6. Do something that's been hanging over your head.
For me, I need a new light fixture for the bedroom. Maybe as soon as I finish this column, I'll log off for the day and find a new light fixture.
7. Call your mom.
Or your dad. Or your sister. Or your best friend from high school. Of course, this only works well if they are ducking out of work early too, or if they live on the East Coast while you're on the West. Regardless, it's good to talk to people who knew you when you were young.
8. Go to the gym.
A good workout is a great thing.
9. Make a great dinner for your family.
Surprise the spouse and kids with a fantastic homemade meal--something that requires fresh herbs that you carefully picked out during your kid-free trip to the grocery store.
Just sit and stare into space. Or meditate, or be mindful, or whatever the hip thing is these days. Just get away from the office and be--don't worry about responsibilities.
If any of these appeal to you, tell your boss that you're heading out early today and encourage her to leave early, too. The work will still be there tomorrow. It never goes away.
Important: If you don't want to honor today's national day, make sure you do tomorrow's: National Donut Day. I had a donut this morning, so I'm like super pro-active or something. Who can say no to such an important day?
