MEGA is our hands-down winner for free cloud storage and backup. If this Kiwi company's 50GB of free storage isn't enough for your business needs, they offer four more tiers of service, with plans from 200GB to 8TB, all available for less than US$25 per month. MEGA also offers discounts for yearly payments.

As MEGA explains on their website, "MEGA was architected around the simple fact that cryptography, for it to be accepted and used, must not interfere with usability. MEGA is fully accessible without prior software installs and remains the only cloud storage provider with browser-based high-performance end-to-end encryption."

MEGA also uses end-to-end encryption to protect your data. So whether you're working on your iOS, Android or Windows phone, a PC, laptop or Apple, that means no one else can see it. Not even MEGA.

Other MEGA features include:

  • Global access through all major browsers, desktops, and mobile devices

  • Secure and real-time collaboration

  • Live encrypted backup

  • Public source code

It's also nice that MEGA offers some nice little freebies for using their service and inviting your friends to use their service. To start, you can get an extra 10 GB of storage for every friend you invite to use the service. Want another 15 GB more? Download the company's mobile app. An extra 20 GB? Install MEGAsync, an automated synchronization between your computer and MEGA that allows you to securely access your data from different locations and devices.

You can try out MEGA without providing any personal data and you'll have access to any content you upload until it "expires," though exactly how long that is isn't clear from MEGA's website or the welcome PDF you can review once you've decided to try it out.

Be sure you use your account fairly regularly, though. MEGA recommends on their website that your account can expire if you don't use it regularly. To ensure that doesn't happen, they suggest logging in at least every three months. "We will send several warnings to your registered email address before deactivating accounts that appear not used or abandoned, giving you the opportunity to react."

As much as we love MEGA, there is a drawback to be aware of that could impact some users who need to upload and download very large files. MEGA's 10GB bandwidth limit (refreshed every 30 minutes) means you may experience significant delays downloading and uploading. You can, work around this, however, when collaborating with other users by generating a link you can share with them. You can give them full access, allowing them to make changes to your files or restrict them to viewing or adding files only.
