What better time than Earth Day to start making your business a little greener--and, perhaps, a little more efficient, too. Here are two ways to do so.

  1. Mind that electric bill. Being just a little more careful about how much power your gadgets are using is good for not only your monthly electric bill but also Mother Earth. Try plugging your electronics into a power strip with an “off” switch so you can easily turn them all the way off each night (standby still draws electricity). Optimizing the power settings for computers and other devices can be more than a modest energy saver, according to Treehugger.com. Also, choose energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and maximize natural light for even more savings.
  1. Cut paper use. Software like Greenprint helps eliminate blank pages from documents before printing and can also convert to PDF for paperless document sharing. While most businesses will never be 100 percent paperless, be thoughtful about paper use. Choose recycled stock with a high percentage of post-consumer content and minimum chlorine bleaching for a more positive environmental impact.
