There was a time in my life when I ate tuna out of can, every day at lunch, for nearly three years. I knew a girl in college who would run four miles, every morning, before class–same route, same time of day. And, I once worked with a guy named Ed who was so focused on the job that he would turn off his cell phone as soon as he sat at his desk
While consistency and perseverance are both admirable, and are keys to creating results, there comes a point when static patterns–at work, in our leadership, in our relationships, and to our own emotional and physical wellbeing–can actually become detrimental. Why? Because the world is changing around us. And, if we’re doing the exact same thing we’re did yesterday, we’re falling behind.
Have you ever taken the time truly analyze your life and work habits and patterns? Most people haven’t. But, you have probably tried to figure out some of the results of your patterns, like, “Why am I not moving ahead at work?” or “Why do I keep ending up in similar (relationship, career, health) situations?”
The answers to those to questions are quite simple. It’s because you’ve created patterns, and don’t recognize that you’re overdue for some new habits.
Here are nine reasons you should consider disrupting your patterns today–even if you’re still unaware that they exist.
1. You’re at a stand still.
Although the need for change is obvious with this first reason, many of us can find ourselves operating in auto-pilot and still wondering why nothing has changed.
2. You can forecast a negative outcome.
We all know the negative effects of habits that arm harmful to our physical health. But, the same is true in our careers and our lives. Coasting, lying, cheating, and bad-mouthing will eventually catch up to us.
3. You’re bored.
Sure, we all have moments of dullness. But, if you’ve been bored for a while, it’s time to check your daily patterns (before you run off to find a new career). Small pattern changes can create huge results.
4. You’re boring.
If you ever feel like people avoid hearing your stories, it’s time to create some new ones. The easiest way to do this is to pick up some new habits like; joining a karate class, taking a hike on your lunch break, or looking for new, more innovative ways, to improve the lives of those around you.
5. Relationships are suffering.
While working passionately to complete a project, chasing the dream of becoming a world class body builder, or meeting with the girls every Thursday night for Happy Hour might be the things you get excited about, it’s important to truly understand the people you’re affect by your patterns.
6. Your way doesn’t work anymore.
A few years ago you might have experienced huge success by following a structured method. But, ask yourself if that method still works. Remember, at one time, the entire world thought the brick cell phone was cool. Today, it just seems silly.
7. You’re not feeling the love.
The number one thing employees say they want from their boss or organization is to feel appreciated. And, if you’re doing the exact same thing every day, you’re not creating opportunities to get noticed. Look for ways to make positive changes at your office that your customers, coworkers, and leaders will absolutely love.
8. You need to understand the difference between determination and delusion.
While patterns make us feel safe, and daily habits allow us to operate without much thought, it’s important realize the difference between being determined, and being delusional about certain goals. Running four miles a day won’t prepare you for a marathon. It’s either time to change your pattern, or time to choose a new goal.
9. We’re all just one day closer to dying.
While this last one sounds harsh, it’s true. The longer we stick with our habits, the harder they are to break. Think about the person you want to become. Analyze your small daily habits. Seriously ask yourself if you’re on the right track. And, realize, we’re all running out of time to change. So, do it today.
Consistency and perseverance are great. Habits are both good and bad. And, no matter what kind of patterns you’ve created in life, or at work, it’s important to step back every now and again to see if it’s time to change.
