Billion-dollar startups are popping up at breakneck speed.
In a comprehensive report on the state of venture capital, entrepreneur-turned-VC Mark Suster found that in the last 18 months, the number of U.S.-based private companies with a valuation exceeding $1 billion jumped from 30 to 80. Worldwide, there are now 141 of these so-called unicorns, according to CB Insights, the venture capital and angel investment database.
CB Insights's infographic below (click the image to enlarge) shows the point during the period between 2011 and 2015 that each of those companies joined the unicorn club. It's a very clear look at just how fast the club's growth has accelerated over time.
