Billion-dollar startups are popping up at breakneck speed.

In a comprehensive report on the state of venture capital, entrepreneur-turned-VC Mark Suster found that in the last 18 months, the number of U.S.-based private companies with a valuation exceeding $1 billion jumped from 30 to 80. Worldwide, there are now 141 of these so-called unicorns, according to CB Insights, the venture capital and angel investment database.
