Roughly two-thirds of Americans are reportedly planning a vacation this summer. That's good news, considering that more than 40 percent of Americans took zero vacation days last year. But what if you don't have the time or money for something far-flung?

Don't discount the "staycation"--especially if you live in an area rich in recreational opportunities and dining options.

Ahead of the 2015 summer travel season, personal finance site WalletHub released its annual list of the Best & Worst Cities for Staycations, ranking 100 of the most densely populated U.S. urban centers across 17 key metrics, and defining staycation as a period lasting for roughly four days. The study took into account factors such as the prevalence and cost of attractions (zoos, movie theaters, night life, etc.) as well as the cost of relaxation, for instance, at spas and resorts. It drew on data from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the Council for Community and Economic Research, and further divided the cities into three sub-rankings: recreation, food, and rest.

The map below represents the study's findings, with better staycation cities represented in shades of blue. You'll notice that the northernmost part of the country--when represented--tends to fare better than its southern hubs, notably, California's expensive Orange County region.

Although some winners make sense as popular destinations (consider Orlando's eternal sunshine and the draw of Disney World,) others, like Cincinnati and Scottsdale, may surprise you. Scottsdale, for instance, has the highest number of public golf courses per 100,000 residents, and Cincinnati has the second highest number of public pools, factors which went into determining their status.

Below are the top 10 U.S. cities for staycations this summer. You can read the report in its entirety over at WalletHub:
